Given how long it’s taken the scientific community, Mech included, to cotton on to the truth of wolves, I’m not about to blame fantasy writers for having failed to know better, sooner. I will, however, fault them for using the alpha-beta system as an excuse to craft shapeshifter societies where female shifters are rare and special for no good reason; where women are expected to both love and excuse the aggressive behaviour of men; where punitive hierarchies are aggressively enforced; and where controlling, coercive, stalkerish actions are pardoned because It’s What Women Really Want.

6 Days left to back Hungry Ghost!
The Rare, now fixed on Rory, took a steady step in his direction. His jaw hung open, his tongue lolling out the front between two meathook canine teeth. He looked irritated at the distraction, but then his eyes fixed on Lexie, and narrowed.
The Rare walked, then trotted, then burst into running strides. Rory held his ground for one, then two huge gains by the wolf. Then he turned and ran.
The wolf closed the gap between them in seconds. His next step was part leap, claws ready to fell.
A sharp crack shattered the siren’s song.

She wanted to growl, to howl, to shout and rage. She wanted to curse Blythe’s arrogance, to curse her ego and her death and the tailspin it caused in everyone. Lexie wanted to curse her own passion, her blindness, her willful ignorance of the obvious missteps and treacherous descent. But she saw herself from the outside and felt foolish. She bit her tongue until she tasted blood and then stopped.
She thought this would be different, college.

Excerpt from Hungry Ghost (Book 2 of the Tales of the Pack Series)
“You like this cage?” Randy asked. “I know the guy who makes them down in Cali. Kinky mother fucker. Does great work, yeah?”
“It’s the real deal,” Lexie said. “I don’t think I could break this apart with a chainsaw.”
“I suppose that’s kind of the point.”
“What do you mean?”
“Well, all this play is psychological, though some of it comes with physical sensation. If you got locked in a chintzy dog crate, you’d probably be more rapt with figuring out how to break it rather than surrendering to the experience. Most of this whole thing,” Randy said, gesturing to the room, “is upholding the illusion so you can give yourself over to the experience.”
“What illusion?”
“That you’re powerless,” Randy said, gesturing to the black-haired girl in the sling. “Or, that you’re all powerful,” nodding to the person with the goatee. “Both are lies, but here, you can let yourself believe they’re true. And that’s where the magic happens.”
